I downloaded Hunter Rose's collection, image by image, and I have 1359 files (not including thumbnail pages). While some of the images are photographs of Bishop, and at least one is a sample of his signature, I believe I have more than the 1200-odd number of images you mention. I also remember some drawings that are not found in the collection.

As I enjoy bondage and Bishop's artwork, I was really amused by your quiz

I'm so glad you and so many others are enjoying the quiz!

I've not written much about creating it, so here's some narrative, partly for you, partly for anyone who scrolls down this far, and partly to give some credit to friends who helped.

This whole idea started when several friends were on a quiz-taking binge. Often they'd all take the same quiz and my friends page would have the same few results over and over. That happens when a quiz only has a handful of results, so I dreamed of creating a quiz with hundreds of results! I also wanted only a few questions (I don't have the patience for long quizes), where every unique combination would give a different result.

Turns out, [info]pdxropedom had recently helped me recover files from old backup tapes. In the early 90s hard drives were small and all the files I'd downloaded had been stuck on old tapes for years.... including the Bishop art collection assembled by Hunter Rose.

So I picked about 120 of the Bishop images and tried to categorize them. What an insurmountable task that was! I'd do a couple dozen and realize I wasn't being consistent. I'd also get distracted, as many are so detailed and pretty erotic. Even trying to stay focused and on task, there were just far to many to categorize into multiple scales for the quiz.

Then I got the idea to make another quiz to get the info needed to make the real quiz. I'll call it the "survey". It would randomly show one of the images and ask the viewer to rate it with 4 questions. One question included the level of pain and also if the Dom was present, so it was sort of 5. The 5th question asked how erotic the picture seemed.

Several friends took the survey. [info]kiara_idorys in particular put in an incredible effort! I posted to a couple LJ communities, and within a couple months dozens of people had done the survey, offering about 5000 sets of answers (and viewing Bishop image after image).

The data sat for almost a year. Several times I tried view it, but 5000 lines also seemed overwhelming. Eventually I sorted it and decided I could never do a perfect job, so instead I focused mostly on the dom persent vs alone, and the pain/torture answers, and that turned it into 8 much more manageable data sets. They weren't perfect and especially for the tame pictures there weren't many, but that's how it all shook out.

Also, I used those "how hot" answers to weed out about 40 of the pictures. I personally know many of the people who did the survey, and many were het or bi women. However, the 20-some pictures depicting men scored the absolute lowest on the how-erotic question. They also didn't have much variety (most were tame), so they got cut. I had really wanted to make a gender choice on the quiz, but between so few male pics and everyone not liking them, there was little choice. The other 20 were in the middle intensity, where there were so many pics and the ones people felt weren't as sexy were cut when there were more than all the possible answers could select.

Then I tried create the quiz online. What a disappointment, Most of those quiz sites are very limiting. OkCupid was by far the best, but even theirs had a limit of 50 pictures and 32 result categories (and I needed 88 and 128). I sent emails to the okcupid folks begging them to increase the limits, but they never replied. It seemed all this work would never be seen by anyone.

Then I came up with the crazy idea of not using any quiz website. At first the coding seemed impossible. But then I started fiddling with javascript and luckily there are MANY excellent tutorials and lots of great, well explained examples on the web. Now I wish I'd kept a list of the many, many websites that gave me so much help.... who sooooo deserve a big "Thank You". It took a lot of fiddling, but eventually I got it working. (anyone who wants to see it can just view the html source)

Then it turns out livejournal doesn't allow javascript, so even though I had it all working nicely on my computer, I couldn't post it here. I found several free web hosting sites, and ultimately went with web1000. They add a "toolbar" at the top of the page, but at least they don't have popups like most of the others.

The last part was writing all those captions. 128 of them. A few were easy for my favorite images... the ones I'd personally spent some time fantasizing about. I asked friends if they wanted to help, but everyone was busy. Ultimately, [info]arecee and I wrote them all in a couple days. It seemed like we'd never finish, but then we got into the "zone" and wrote almost all of them in one evening.

We finished around 10pm, and then went out to a bar for late happy hour... with a big printout of all the captions, each next to a small copy its image. We sat there, drinking and proofreading, crossing out ones that were lame or needed a little something extra, and noting spelling and grammar mistakes.... all the while wondering if the waitress or other patrons might notice we were editing captions for porn!

Soon the quiz was online and working, and I posted in a couple LJ communities and emailed friends... and after an initial surge, it seems to be slowly spreading as more and more kinky or kink-curious people find it.

At the last minute I added the free statcounter to the results pages, so we could see how many people take the quiz. They have a pretty amazing service - though the "detail" log is so tiny that you really need to pay them if you want more information than the number of people who've viewed the page.

One thing I did learn from statcounter is that the vast majority of people do the quiz only once, maybe twice. A small number do it 10 or more times... some doing it over and over for what must be hours, trying to see every picture. So I added that "just show me all the images" link, which magically appears at the top of the results page after you've done the quiz 3 times in the last hour.

So that's the long story of this quiz. Not sure if you wanted all this, but it feels good to finally get it written down. If anyone wants to make a quiz this "hard" way (without the limiting quiz websites), just contact me and I'll be happy to share everything and help you.

Something went wrong at WEB1000, the free hosting company I used to host the quiz pages. Unfortunately, the quiz form and result pages won't work on livejournal because they use javascript.

I got the chamber commerce site too this morning and was starting to search for a different company, but WEB1000 seem to have fixed whatever went wrong. That's good, since they're pretty much the only completely free hosting that allows adult material.

Thanks for reporting the problem, and please just try again. Maybe even throw WEB1000 a bone by clicking one of their ads when you're done?

Looks like web1000's server is not working. The actual quiz is hosted by web1000 because livejournal automatically filters out all javascript (and that's how it works).

I sent a message to web1000 using their trouble ticket form. But honestly, I really don't expect much "service" for free web hosting.

I decided not to renew my livejournal paid acct, and all those pics were hosted via livejournal. With all the changes being made to LJ, I'm just not feeling like supporting the site anymore.

Someday I'll upload them to another server and rework all that html. With 90 pics and 128 results pages, it's no small task. It may be a while until I find time to do it.
