Google is failing me, so I am appealing to the collective knowledge of damnportlanders. I'm trying to do a clean OS install on my roommate's virus riddled machine, but I cannot get the freaking CD to boot. She's got two DVD drives, tried them both and get the same error (your basic can't boot, press F1 to try again). I set the BIOS to boot from the disc, same error. I've tested it on another machine, the CD is fine (and it is a legitimate copy, not from a torrent), but I can't get to the press any key to boot message. Any ideas on where to go from here? It currently has XP, but I'm installing 7. Specs are fine, not my first time installing 7, shouldn't be an issue.

I have decided to get into coupons and have been learning a lot about how to do so.. but it seems the best coupon inserts (SmartSource and RedPlum) come with the Sunday newspaper. I don't take a newspaper and it seems silly to buy one just for the ads that most people don't even read. Anybody know if these inserts are available for free anywhere? Or is anybody near Rose City Park that takes the paper open to leaving the Sunday circulars on your porch for me to pick up weekly? Thanks buds.

So, if you don't have yard waste removal as part of your waste management services, are there other things you can legally and responsibly do to get rid of any waste you have from your yard? (I don't want to put it in my neighbor's yard or send it to the landfill. I assume it doesn't just get put in the landfill when I put it in the yardwaste container, right?) Thanks! ETA: wow, really? Is my best option to buy a chipper and start selling mulch? In other news, I am appreciating our mild weather and that we are not currently experiencing snowpocalypse 2009. It was pretty, but, yeah.

Gang: Trying to find a bar tool set for a Christmas gift. You know, kinda like this: I'm checking the places you'd usually expect to find something like this (i.e., Crate & Barrel, kitchen gadget places, etc.), but the stuff I'm finding has a lot more emphasis on appearance than function. My question is if anyone knows of a restaurant/bar supply store or something, that is open to the public, where I might find a set that is more utilitarian (and thus perhaps more solidly built) than the other options. Thanks a ton!

this fudge is wonderful (I use the best dark chocolate chips I can find, always 75% chocolate or better) and I have had rave reviews for years with it. It costs less than $3 to make if buying at WINCO and uses a microwave, a microwavable container (round shape is good to use mixer in), a hand mixer and something for the chocolate to set up in. Absurdly Easy Chocolate Fudge (makes 16 2-in. squares) 16 oz. (450 g) chocolate chips 4 Tbs. (57 g) butter 14 oz. (396 g) can sweetened condensed milk combine ingredients in a microwavable container;melt in microwave;mix (use hand mixer for best results) until it starts to thicken (I add vanilla flavoring at this point and add nuts, mini marshmallows or whatever you like at this point;pour into pan and chill in frig to set Sometimes I will add a layer of peanut butter fudge on top of the chocolate fudge for a really great candy, use peanut butter chips and make the same recipe and either eat solo or add to the top of chocolate fudge.

Ok, so you're at the movie theater, and you're the type of person who can't sit through an entire movie without having to get up and go pee or whatever. You know you're this type of person, because you have to know it. Is it too much for me to expect you to sit on the aisle, where you won't bother those of us who can sit through an entire movie? And if you don't sit on the aisle, do I have the right to be annoyed when you're wandering back and forth through the row in front of me at a critical moment in the movie? A parallel question: if the person wandering around the row is a child, do the parents have the responsibility to sit that child on the aisle? Am I just being a dick? Discuss. Snark welcome.

What is the deal with so many of Portland's Vegans always having to whore out their dietary preference to everyone they come across? A simple "where should we eat" turns into a fifteen minute tirade about the evils of meat, oppressive consumerism, and how not going to a vegan-only restaurant was prejudice and discriminatory. Hell, a lot of the vegetarians I know can't stand most of the self-righteous veggienauts they meet. It has to be something about how it's fucking "trendy" to be a vegan in Portland or it's some kind of 'cause' or purpose. :/ If you "ascended into Veganism" after watching some PETA video about chickens, or pandas, or kangaroos; well, that just makes me want to go and deep fry a bunny and smother it in steak sauce.

So I'm starting the Couch-to-5K program tomorrow, and I'd really like to start eating a more balanced, healthy diet while I'm at it. I don't eat terrible food right now (no fast food, junk food, etc.), but being as I'm on a tight budget, I tend to eat a lot of cheap things in cans (tuna sandwiches are like, my mainstay) and I often fall victim to carbs-in-a-box. I'd really like to increase my veggie intake beyond just dark green salads, but I'm a little clueless when it comes to tasty veggie dishes that aren't going to break the bank and aren't super complex to prepare (I'm a decent cook, so I can handle intermediate level things). I figured since I'm living in a city with more vegetarians per square foot than anywhere I've ever lived before, you guys might have some ideas. What's your favourite veggie and/or well-balanced dish to make? I'm usually cooking for one, so anything that can be made in quick, single portions (or easily frozen, etc) is a plus. P.S. - I've had it recommended to me to sign up for a future 5K run right now, so I have a goal/deadline in mind. Anyone have suggestions? Run/walk 5Ks are going to be more my style, I think, but any input is appreciated. I'm looking at the Shamrock Run and Race for the Roses right now, and not having much luck finding many "reviews" of them.

My cousin, who currently is staying with me in Raleigh Hills, would like to move closer to his work, which is in Boring (and how!). I'm not fond of my current apartment and kind of tempted to move as well, since with our combined incomes we can form Voltron probably afford to rent a house. However, I'm enjoying my current walking distance to public transit and services type lifestyle. He'd really like to live within 15 miles of work, and we'd both like to live someplace with minimal crime and similar unpleasantness. I kind of have a hate on for Gresham since my car was stolen there about 5 years ago and my first boyfriend used to live there, but may be able to be convinced that it has parts that lack these faults. I'm concerned about living in Boring or Sandy because of the lack of decent public transit. Anyway, are there any places we should particularly look at out that direction? We'd prefer to rent a 2-4 bedroom detached house with a garage and some storage space, but can be flexible if a place is otherwise awesome. We're quiet types who don't throw obnoxious parties and would blend in well in a typical residential neighborhood, but I do want to be able to walk to a decent restaurant, a grocery store, and a park rather than live in Endless Houses All The Same type suburbia.

CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION HAS ANCIENT ORIGINS King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture with the Springfield Extension Center. The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter solstice arrive, they brought green date palm leaves into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death. The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one's journey through life. Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and place evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits. Late in the Middle Ages, Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees inside their homes or just outside their doors to show their hope in the forthcoming spring. Our modern Christmas tree evolved from these early traditions. Legend has it that Martin Luther began the tradition of decorating trees to celebrate Christmas. One crisp Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking through snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of a group of small evergreens. Their branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moonlight. When he got home, he set up a little fir tree indoors so he could share this story with his children. He decorated it with candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth. The Christmas tree tradition most likely came to the United States with Hessian troops during the American Revolution, or with German immigrants to Pennsylvania and Ohio, adds Robson. But the custom spread slowly. The Puritans banned Christmas in New England. Even as late as 1851, a Cleveland minister nearly lost his job because he allowed a tree in his church. Schools in Boston stayed open on Christmas Day through 1870, and sometimes expelled students who stayed home. The Christmas tree market was born in 1851 when Catskill farmer Mark Carr hauled two ox sleds of evergreens into New York City and sold them all. By 1900, one in five American families had a Christmas tree, and 20 years later, the custom was nearly universal. Christmas tree farms sprang up during the depression. Nurserymen couldn't sell their evergreens for landscaping, so they cut them for Christmas trees. Cultivated trees were preferred because they have a more symmetrical shape then wild ones. Six species account for about 90 percent of the nation's Christmas tree trade. Scotch pine ranks first, comprising about 40 percent of the market, followed by Douglas fir which accounts for about 35 percent. The other big sellers are noble fir, white pine, balsam fir and white spruce.

Do any of you all listen to audio books in MP3 format? What service do you use, what do you get for it and how much does it cost? I'm researching this for a friend who is currently listening to books on cd but would like to switch to MP3. She's currently paying about $10/book, which seems expensive to me. She listens to 3 to 4 books a month. Any advice, tips, pointers, etc.? Thanks, DP! ETA: Thank you so much for the help so far! I should add that my "friend" is actually an elderly relative, so she's not super media- or tech-savvy. Ease of use is a consideration. Also, she is in Texas, so no access to our awesome library system, although I will definitely still pass that suggestion along.
